Rhodes is considered to be one of the most beautiful islands in Greece, and it is steeped in history. Traces of human occupation have been found to go back as far as Prehistoric times, and when the Knights rule the island it became one of the most important places in Greece. Its history is reflected in several museums, which are just one of the many reasons people holiday in Rhodes.

The sunshine, the scenery, the beaches and the culture are among the reasons that Rhodes is a popular tourist destination, If you like the sound of this wonderful place, it is easy to find cheap package holidays to Rhodes at this site. Archaeological Museum

In 1440, the Grand Master of the Knights started the construction of the Palace of The Grand Master. It was not until 1948 that it was completed. Part of it was the Hospital of the Knights, and this now houses the Archaeological Museum, which is one of the best of its kind in Europe and certainly top of the list of the museums of Rhodes. It contains items from different ages that have been found all over the island, as well as some funerary slabs of the Knights.

Municipal Art Gallery

The Municipal Art Gallery is located on Simi Square, and it houses a beautiful collection of paintings from Greek artists. The old two-story building where it is situated has Medieval architecture and arches on the ground floor that lead to the entrance.

Toy Museum

The Rhodes Toy Museum sits among olive groves just outside the village of Archipoli. It is surrounded by mountains and pine forests and is completely solar powered. The exhibits are toys made in Greece from about 1930 to 1990 and in the basement, visitors can try some of the gaming machines from the 1960’s such as Pacman and a pinball machine.

There is an outside play area for children and a terrace from where you can enjoy stunning views. In the gift shops, the souvenirs they sell are original toys.

Jewish Museum

One of the most popular museums of Rhodes, The Jewish Museum of Rhodes was established in 1977 at the historic Kahal Shalom Synagogue of Rhodes, which was built in 1577. The museum presents historical facts about the lives of Jewish people on the island and some of the exhibits go back as far as 1852. The walls are adorned with many photos of Jewish families that have lived on Rhodes, which cover many different periods.

The Museum Of Modern Art

This museum houses extensive collections of paintings, drawings, sculptures, engravings and documents of historical importance. The idea behind the museum is to show the history of Greece through the eyes of 20th-century artists, and it reflects the international character of the country.

Rhodes has more museums that just these few, between them representing the whole history of the island.
