Daphne (2007)

As is well-known and frequently discussed, the gothically-inclined English woman of letters, Daphne Du Maurier, also happened to be a lesbian, but virulently suppressed these inclinations given her beloved father’s abhorrence to her behavior – attitudes that Du Maurier imbibed and that gave her lifelong pangs of guilt and self-denial.

She experienced two life-altering loves, however: an irreciprocal one for straight Ellen Doubleday, the wife of her publisher Nelson Doubleday, and another for bisexual actress Gertrude Lawrence, which Lawrence purportedly helped her consummate.

daphne 2007 lesbian movie

As created for Du Maurier’s centenary, Claire Beavan’s BBC production Daphne dramatizes the connection between these two relationships; Beavan pulls from private letters and memoirs to depict the series of events by which Du Maurier (played by Geraldine Somerville) fell into an impassioned love for Doubleday (Elizabeth McGovern), and how the unrequited nature of that love spurred her on to author a play about forbidden romantic longings, September Tide – a play that, ironically, introduced her to the second great love of her life, Lawrence (Janet McTeer).

In so doing, the film not only resurrects a long-buried and hidden part of Du Maurier’s life but explores the connection between life experiences and highly personalized artistic expression. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi.

Lister is often called “the first modern lesbian” for her clear self-knowledge and openly lesbian lifestyle. Viola De Mar (The Sea Purple) (2009)

A woman who dares to live as she pleases is officially declared a man in this historical drama inspired by a true story. Angela (Valeria Solarino) is a strong, passionate, and willful woman whose father (Ennio Fantastichini) operates a mining business for the Spanish royal family.

Her father wanted a boy and makes no secret of his disgust with Angela, despite (or perhaps because of) her willingness to flaunt the conventions of what is acceptable for a woman in 19th century Spain.

Angela is powerfully attracted to her childhood friend Sara (Isabella Ragonese), and though Sara is pledged to marry Tommaso (Marco Foschi), Angela sets out to win her heart.

Her father, however, has arranged a marriage between Angela and the son of a business associate; Angela bitterly refuses to wed the young man, declaring she would prefer death to the false relationship. Her mother, Lucia (Giselda Volodi), arranges for a radical solution to this dilemma; using some privileged information as leverage, she persuades the village priest to declare that Angela is, in fact, Angelo and has been a male all along.

This action prevents Angela from marrying the boy and allows her and Sara to be together, but now her father insists she take her place in a business she doesn’t care about, and the community isn’t sure how to react to the new “man” in the village. Viola di Mare (aka Purple Sea) was an official selection at the 2010 San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival.

All the stress adversely affects Karen’s engagement to Joe Cardin (James Garner). Although the movie doesn’t have a lesbian scene, it speaks about the ‘stigma’ of lesbianism during the 1930s.

  6. Excellent list, thank you! Butterfly Kisses with Amanda Plummer and Saskia Reeves is a fantastic dark psyche thriller that has to be watched more than once. Hey does anyone remember one from the 90’s about two women (I believe spanish speaking but possibly Italian) who want to have a baby so they try to trick the brother of one of the girls into “donating” by preparing oysters (aphrodisiac) and something to make him go to sleep? His boss ends up coming over and eating and drinking what was intended for the brother…it was really funny and cooky. I can’t think of the name for anything, nor find it on google.

  7. There was a great movie and wonderful music from a French movie about two beautiful Lesbian lovers. The movie was, I believe, Belitz? Can you discover the movie and theme song for me?

  8. Why isn’t Desert Hearts on this list? Another fabulous film!

Thanks for all the other titles. I strongly encourage people to watch “When Night Is Falling.”
