POOR US

Let’s hear it for the big boys! It’s no secret that representation in media is important, which is exactly why POOR US’s main protagonist Tanner Maxwell is so refreshing! Confident, powerful and sassy – Tanner is a plus size gay character that breaks the mold.

Image Credit: POOR US Web Series

“I wrote POOR US because Hollywood wasn’t writing for my character type,” says Jeremy Dozier – writer, producer and star of the award-winning POOR US. “Every role I auditioned for either centered around weight in some way or was Security Guard #4. I wanted more. It’s about time big boys get a character that they can root for and see themselves in; one that isn’t ashamed of their body or sexuality.”

Dozier’s award-winning role (Dozier was named Best Actor at the LA Shorts Awards earlier this month) is boundary pushing. “I wanted to play a confident, powerful fat gay character; something rarely, if ever, seen,” says Dozier.
“Growing up, I don’t remember seeing myself represented in media. If I had, coming out, coming to terms with my body and figuring out where I fit in in gay culture would have been easier.”

The brainchild of openly gay actor/comedian Jeremy Dozier (Dirty Girl, iCarly), POOR US follows the story of two gay, fraternal twin brothers as they cope with being cut off by their filthy-rich father and try to rebuild their lives in hell, or as it’s better know: Van Nuys. Think Broad City meets Schitt’s Creek, but gayer.
