Roman Rotunda

The Roman Rotunda is the most majestic ancient monument in Thessaloniki. It was erected sometime during the early 4th century AD and was supposed to be designed as a mausoleum for Emperor Galerius. It was transformed into a Christian church and a cathedral much later. It was also changed into a mosque during the Ottoman era, before being converted into the Church of Saint George by the Rotunda in 1912. Today, it can be visited every day by the public. 

The White Tower

This is a Byzantine relic, which was built about 1530 by the Ottoman Turks. This magnificent tower was originally a prison, but now houses the Museum of Byzantine Culture. Visitors can find out all about the art and history of the Byzantine-era in Thessaloniki from 300 – 1430 AD. It has an assortment comprising of various artifacts like liturgical items, wall paintings, mosaics, vases and some early Christian coins. There are also many precious Byzantine religious paintings displayed at this Tower. 


Villa Allatini

The Villa Allatini is located at Kalamaria in the southwestern suburb, and is known for many majestic mansions and villas from the 19th-century. Styled in Neoclassical form by Italian architects, these villas are of great interest for visitors. A princely villa constructed in 1896 by Vitaliano Poselli, the famous Italian architect, the Villa Allatini has the Thessaloniki Prefecture’s offices. Earlier, it was a Jewish residence and then a university building. 

Lake Vistonida

This tranquil lake is located a couple of hours from Thessaloniki and is a great attraction for nature lovers. Thousands of migratory birds love to fly to this well-known wetland region. With over 300 varied species noted here, it is a bird watchers’ paradise.
